Homework allows for the opportunity to practice and hone in on the
skills they are learning in the classroom. On Mondays, the spelling
homework for the week will be assigned. Homework is worth 10 points
each quarter and needs to be turned in daily. If a child misses a day
of school they are expected to have the spelling homework completed when
they return. You can find the homework on-line and on the back of the
weekly newsletter.
Students will use spiral notebooks to complete spelling homework.
Their spelling notebooks will be checked and returned to them each day.
Math homework, usually in the form of a worksheet, will be assigned on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Students will have a new reading story and spelling list
each week but homework will follow a similar routine each week. Here is a
sample of what to expect this year.
Sealston Elementary School
Second Grade Homework
Every day this week:
1. Read this week’s story
2. Practice reading and using your vocabulary words.
3. Practice your addition and subtraction facts.
4. Read for at least 15 minutes. Be sure to
have your parent initial your behavior calendar (this lets me know they
are aware of your behavior and that you have read for 15 minutes).
Monday: Cut out your spelling words and sort them according to their sound and spelling pattern. Glue them into your homework notebook.
Tuesday: Sort your spelling words according to their sound pattern. Write them into your homework notebook. Do your math worksheet.
Wednesday: In your homework notebook, write the
column headers (categories) for your weekly spelling list. Then either a
parent or helper at home pulls a word out of the bag without the
student seeing it and reads it aloud. The student must then write the
word in the appropriate column. Student and helper can choose to
evaluate success after each word or after all words have been called.
(This activity closely resembles a practice spelling test.) Your
spelling test will be Thursday.
Thursday: Do your math worksheet. Don’t forget your
reading and language quizzes will be on Friday. A daily language
worksheet is sent home on Thursday to help students study. Please review
reading comprehension questions to prepare for the reading test.
*If you have questions about how to complete these activities, please refer to the “Word Study Guide”.
